Verizon has reported a widespread service outage which affects cellular data, phone calls, and text messages.  There is no eta for a fix as yet.  Not everyone is affected by this, it seems to be somewhat hit-and-miss as to who is affected.  If you feel you are affected by the outage, please just be patient as they are working on it.  Also, if you notice “SOS” at the top bar of your phone and you are affected, it means that you can make EMERGENCY calls only.  If you have WiFi connectivity, you should be able to make calls or text.
